UNC Recruiting: Week of 5/13

A football commitment, a basketball offer, and lots of intrigue this week

High School Basketball: Hoophall West Tournament-Hillcrest Prep vs Denton Guyer Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The biggest UNC recruiting news of the week has already been covered on this site, that being 4* quarterback Malik Hornsby’s commitment to the Heels. The addition of a quarterback isn’t the only thing that we have to tell you about this week, though, so don’t look away. Let’s take a look-see:

Football

  • Malik Hornsby becomes the headliner of what is a very impressive offensive class for Mack Brown’s first full recruiting cycle: He’s now got a four-star QB, at least two four-star receivers, two highly regarded offensive linemen, two tight ends among the top of their class, and a decent running back prospect all to commit to UNC. His attention will now turn to some of the elite defensive talent he’s been courting, including Des Evans, Kedrick Bingley-Jones, Trenton Simpson, Jacolbe Cowan, and Ja’Qurious Conley. None of them have anything even resembling a timeline for their commitments, so it could be a while. UNC’s currently in solid shape for several of them, though, most notably the 5-star defensive end Evans.
  • Four-star running back Jo’Quavious Marks, from Atlanta, will visit UNC this weekend for the first time after failed previous attempts. He’s got a decision date in mind and it’s soon, but any specifics are behind paywalls. Not a ton has connected UNC and Marks, but this is certainly a favorable visit schedule for the Heels. Mack Brown has already made crazier things happen in his time in Chapel Hill.

Basketball

  • We add another name to the list of 2020 prospects that Roy Williams has offered, post-Puff Johnson (which we covered here), with 4-star point guard Caleb Love. Love, from St. Louis, has seen interest from a ton of Midwest schools as well as programs like Texas, Florida, and Virginia. He’s listed as a point guard, not a combo guard, and his skillset reflects that, as he’s a natural passer and an able, but not super-instinctive, scorer. We’ll have more to say about this as time goes on, I’m sure.
  • In 2019 news, which is still somehow a thing, Precious Achiuwa will announce his college decision on Saturday, and it’s likely either going to be Kansas or Memphis after UNC’s flurry of commitments a few weeks ago. The Heels have a scholarship open, but haven’t seemed to put any moves on Achiuwa lately.
  • Also in the 2019 class, after John Beilein’s departure for the NBA, four-star small forward Jalen Wilson has asked to be released from his LOI to Michigan and has listed UNC, alongside Kansas, Florida, and Oklahoma State, as a program he’d be interested in joining. We don’t know if UNC will reciprocate interest, but Roy Williams is certainly familiar with him and would probably be glad to have a projected multi-year wing player at this stage of the game.
