The Tar Heel baseball team won their first ACC Tournament title in six years after defeating Georgia Tech in the championship game at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday. Carolina was the fifth seed coming into the tournament, and they were able to use some offensive fire power and strong relief work to emerge as the champs.
On their way to the title, the Diamond Heels had to beat Virginia (which came on a walk-off hit by pitch), come back from a five-run deficit against Miami (which was their first win when trailing after seven innings all season), and then absolutely crushing Boston College and the Yellow Jackets 13-5 and 10-2, respectively.
Winning the ACC Tournament propelled the Heels high enough in the national rankings to earn them the right to host an NCAA Regional as one of the top 16 seeds in the tournament. The teams that will be coming to Chapel Hill to join them will be released later today.
Last year, the Diamond Heels made it all the way to Omaha for the College World Series for the first time since 2013. They’ll be looking to repeat that success again after showing a lot of resiliency against some tough teams in Durham.
