It’s that time in the summer where it’s into most kids’ summer breaks for the year, meaning there isn’t much to update about them, but not late enough for football’s camp season or some of the peak AAU basketball sessions, so there isn’t much to say right now in terms of new information, buzz, or commitments, except for the one we’ve covered already. What we do have are recruiting rankings being updated, some information being retroactively confirmed, and lots of excitement with no feasible outlet. Let’s get into it.
Football:
- 2020 wide receiver commit Josh Downs is making a name for himself this summer. He was said to be one of the best receivers in attendance at the Charlotte Nike Opening Regional, and now has had a nice ratings boost from Rivals, from outside their top 250 to being the 130th-ranked player in the country and 30th at his position. UNC may have to work to keep this one until signing day, given both this and the fact that he seems to have removed a lot of UNC stuff from his social media: he may be open to a higher-profile recruitment than what he’d had when UNC initially recruited him. With his uncle Dre Bly on staff, though, UNC obviously holds an edge.
- As Chad covered earlier this week, UNC got a surprise commitment from 4* quarterback Jacolby Criswell of Arkansas. Mack Brown hasn’t been shy about expecting at least one of the three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster to transfer to find a starting opportunity elsewhere, and that seems to be all but certain now. The quarterback situation for 2020 without any transfers could well look like this:
RS Sophomore Jace Ruder (4* DT)
RS Sophomore Cade Fortin (3* PRO)
RS Freshman Sam Howell (4* PRO)
Freshman Malik Hornsby (4* DT)
Freshman Jacolby Criswell (4* DT)
Fortin is the least-decorated of the bunch, and he both had a leg injury in high school and has already shown that he has the goods in college football. That’s a lot of traffic. Like Chad said, these things work themselves out and having too much talent is never a bad thing. But still, it’s good to be aware.

Basketball
- Jalen Wilson took his official visit to UNC at the beginning of this week. No word yet on how it went, but a commitment to either UNC or Kansas should come soon. It feels like his pre-existing relationship with Kansas makes them the favorite, but neither would be a surprise.
- Class of 2020 combo guard Cade Cunningham confirmed he has an offer from UNC, which had previously been assumed by some but never outright stated. That’s much less time between rumored offer and confirmed offer than we had for Cole Anthony last year. Cunningham, from Texas, is ranked as the 6th best player in his class by the 247 Composite but there’s been nobody more impressive this summer and he’s making a case as the best rising senior guard in the country. It’ll be interesting to see if and how this one unfolds. That confirmation, by the way, came thanks to his releasing a top 10: UNC, Oklahoma State, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas, Memphis, Virginia, and Washington.
- And of course, as Brandon pointed out, Day’Ron Sharpe collected a fifth star from 247 the other day. Rivals should join the party sooner or later; remember that they said it would happen in the next update a few weeks ago.
