It’s no secret that Roy Williams has had a very busy week on the recruiting trail, as the evaluation period for college basketball continues. Earlier this week, Williams offered 2021 five-star forward Paolo Banchero, who was the first player to receive an offer for the class. Today, it has been announced that Williams has offered yet another player in the 2020 class, as he continues his pursuit to land yet another strong class after having some success the last two years.
The latest player to receive a scholarship offer is four-star combo guard DJ Steward. The announcement came from Steward himself via his twitter:
Steward is a 6’3, 165 guard that currently plays for Whitney Young High School in Chicago, IL. Recently, he received an offer from Duke, and he already held offers from Illinois, Louisville, Texas, Arizona, NC State, and many others. He is currently the sixth-best combo guard in the 2020 class, and is the 27th best player in the country according to 247 Sports Composite.
Here is what 247 Sports’ Brian Snow has to say about UNC’s latest offer:
A bit of an undersized scoring guard who can really shoot it. Has a good feel for the game, and at times can handle the point guard position because of his solid ball handling ability and decent passing. Gets a lot done on the court production wise. Defensively he will never be great, but he is athletic enough and just big enough to defend either guard spot. An efficient shooter, Steward knows how to get open and should be someone who finds a way to get buckets no matter the level at which he is playing.
Roy Williams now has 16 offers in the hands of members of the 2020 class. Will he continue to send out offers for this class? Or will he turn his focus to 2021 now that he has offered Steward? Also, will there be more scholarship offers that get sent out before the week is over? Just when you thought college basketball was in its quiet period, things are starting to pick back up.
