UNC Recruiting 7/19: 4 basketball offers highlight summer efforts

It was a relatively slow recruiting week, until four basketball offers went out in a 72-hour period.

You know how we do it here. It’s Friday morning, so let’s take a look at the recruiting happenings of the past week. It’s started as a rather slow week, until UNC basketball pulled the trigger on four offers after last week’s Peach Jam. Conversely, football is in a dead period as it recovers from a flurry of commitments in June and early July.

Football

  • Recent commit Clyde Pinder anounced he will participate in the 2020 Adidas All-American Bowl. Not yet a consenus 4-star (247 Sports and ESPN are holding out), Pinder is a prime candidate for a ratings bump after this summer’s performances.
  • We usually don’t announce football offers, but we’ll make an exception for a 4-star defensive back. On July 6th, Dontae Manning decommitted from Oklahoma. On July 7th, UNC extended a scholarship offer. The 247 Sports Composite rankings list Manning as the 99th best player in the nation. UNC will have some serious work to do, but top-100 athletes don’t re-open their recruitment every day. The offer also highlights the coaching staff’s emphasis on the secondary after offseason attrition has depleted that position group in the past few months.

Basketball

  • Obviously, we’ll start with the big news. Four new recruiting targets were offered schoalrships from the UNC coaching staff. The Heels got a jump on their 2021 recruiting, offering two of the top players in that class. Power forward Paolo Banchero from Seattle, Washington was the first to get an offer last Monday. He was followed by small forward Patrick Baldwin on Wednesday. Both are considered the top players at their position by the 247 Sports Composite.

Those two offers were joined by two additional offers to the 2020 class. Point guards D.J. Steward and R.J. Davis also were extended offers on Wednesday. Both are 4-star recruits. Steward is currently a top-30 guard, while Davis is hovering near the top-100 (depending on your recruiting service of choice).

As I mentioned yesterday, Davis will likely see his stock soar up the rankings after his performances this summer. Steward is hovering near the top-25 and will be in contention for 5th star with a strong close to the summer.

  • Both 2020 small forward Ziaire Williams and 2020 point guard Cade Cunningham continue to impress. Check out these highlights from the recent FIBA U-19 World Championship.
  • The Peach Jam wasn’t the only high-profile AAU event last weekend. 2020 UNC commit Day’Ron Sharpe was named to the all-tournament team at the Adidas Summer Championships, helping lead Garner Road to a runner-up finish.
  • Not to be outdone, UNC target Bryce Thompson was named to Rivals’ All-Tournament Team for the Under-Armour Association Finals. Recruiting analyst Eric Bossi included Thompson among the top 8 players in that event.
  • Finally, Cam’Ron Fletcher announced his top 5 schools on Tuesday. UNC made the list, andis joined by Kentucky, Missouri, Michigan State, and Kentucky. The next step will be to schedule an official visit.
