UNC Summer Baseball Update-The Playoffs are in Sight

Both Summer Leagues are coming down the stretch. How are the Tar Heels doing?

As the page turns to the back half of July and the start of the new school year is less than a month away, summer baseball in both the Cape Cod League and Coastal Plain League is winding down. Both leagues have a little over a week to go in their regular season and teams are gearing up for the playoffs.

On the Cape, the top four teams in each five-team division move on to the playoffs. The good news for the only remaining Tar Heel on the Cape, Austin Love, is that his Orleans Firebirds are in third and are a solid four games ahead of the last place Brewster Whitecaps. There’s still a week and a half left for the Whitecaps to get back involved, but it’s looking good for Love to make the playoffs.

Closer to home, the Coastal Plain League is a little more complicated. With the four divisions, the League decides to crown a first half and a second half champion, and then the two teams play to be the division winner, and so on. None of the teams the Heels are on qualified in the first half, so any chance for postseason play will come down to the second half. High Point and Forest City are in a tie for first in the West division, but first through last are only separated by two games, so there’s plenty of opportunity for chaos there. Wilmington and Holy Springs are in second place in the East, but they are three games back with a losing record, so their chances aren't looking good. Lexington and Martinsville are in last in their divisions, so their climb has to be even higher.

This time next week, teams will be eliminated and the regular season will be almost done. In the meantime, let’s see how the remaining Tar Heels playing summer ball are doing.
