UNC Recruiting: #CommitmentWatch is back!

A high-profile in-state 2020 football recruit is announcing his decision on Saturday

NCAA Football: ACC Media Days Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

Finally, August is here. Fall camp is in session for football, school starts later this month... everything’s finally starting to look like college sports are just around the corner after far too long a summer break. But in the meantime, we’re not quite there. That doesn’t mean nothing’s happening in the worlds of recruiting, though. Let’s take a look:

  • One of North Carolina’s top players in the 2020 class, defensive end Kedrick Bingley-Jones, will be announcing his commitment on Saturday at noon after having announced a final four of Duke, North Carolina, Ohio State, and Florida. Things are looking pretty good for UNC; his Crystal Ball picks on Rivals universally favor the Tar Heels at this point and he came back to UNC for an unofficial visit after finishing his officials to all his finalists. We’ll keep you posted on this one.
  • If KBJ does pop for the good guys, it’ll be excellent timing, because defensive end prospect Sean Martin, who had committed to UNC from West Virginia, has decommitted from UNC. One of his best friends just recently committed to WVU, so that’s probably his destination. Good luck to him.
  • As Brandon covered when it happened, UNC has received another running back commitment, this time from Elijah Green out of Roswell, GA. He’s the third Roswell product in this recruiting class, after Trey Zimmerman and John Copenhaver. Green is the third running back in this class, making me personally suspect that Mack Brown thinks he’s losing two guys after this year in Antonio Williams and Michael Carter.

  • Players are starting to cut down their lists for the class of 2020, and UNC is appearing on a fair few of them. The most high-profile was probably Cade Cunningham, who dropped a top 5 consisting of UNC, Kentucky, Oklahoma State, Florida, and Washington. It’s still probably smart money that he goes to Oklahoma State where his brother is a coach, but it’s exciting nevertheless.
  • DJ Steward released a top 8 that included UNC alongside Duke, DePaul, Louisville, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, and Texas. Earl Timberlake chopped his list to 7, keeping UNC, Alabama, Miami, Seton Hall, Providence, South Carolina, and Pittsburgh. Ziaire Williams and Caleb Love should drop top 6’s any day now. It’s that time of year, folks.
  • Meanwhile, the Summer of Day’Ron Sharpe continues, as he follows up a seriously impressive summer camp session with the announcement, as we reported yesterday, that he’s transferring from his local South Central High School to Montverde Academy, where several current NBA stars have played and he’ll get to continue his meteoric rise with specialized training and improved facilities. Cade Cunningham is currently there, too... I kid. Kind of.
  • Just a quick housekeeping note: We’ll start putting up the 2021 tables some time in the future, when that cycle seems to have kicked into gear. With two preliminary offers where it doesn’t look like a ton of work has been done on either side yet, the space isn’t really warranted.
