The North Carolina Tar Heels have received a commitment tonight from 2020 five-star center Walker Kessler. His commitment follows his official visit to campus this weekend, and now gives the Tar Heels two five-star recruits for the 2020 recruiting class.
Kessler’s commitment was a bit of a surprise, as 247Sports had Duke as a heavy favorite to land the Georgia resident. It was a typical battle between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels, and in the end, Roy Williams came out victorious. What’s perhaps the most interesting about this commitment is that the Heels already have a commitment from fellow five-star center Day’Ron Sharpe, which gives them the third and fourth best centers in the 2020 class. Needless to say, depth in that particular position shouldn’t be an issue should Armando Bacot decide to enter the NBA draft.
Here’s what Kessler told 247Sports this past summer about UNC:
“Obviously, North Carolina knows how to use their bigs,” Kessler told 247Sports over the summer. “They look for bigs who are versatile and can run the floor, which is basically their offense.”
2020 was seen as a boom or bust year for the Tar Heels, and so landing Kessler is a big step in the right direction. This weekend will also be a big weekend for recruiting visits, so we will see if anymore prospects decide to follow suit. Check back in with us later in the week as we will provide previews of the players who will be visiting, and which names to keep a close eye on.
