Freshman quarterback Sam Howell and junior defensive end Tomon Fox both received player of the week honors from the ACC for their Week 2 performances. Howell was selected as both the Quarterback of the Week as well as Rookie of the Week, while Fox was selected for Defensive Lineman of the Week. This is now Howell’s second week in a row being recognized by the ACC, as he won the Rookie of the Week award after the Heels’ victory against South Carolina.
Howell’s performance against Miami added on to what is starting off as a very promising freshman campaign, as he completed 16 of his 24 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. The most notable moment of the game was on 4th and 17th when he completed a game-saving pass to Rontavius Groves, and completed the drive by throwing the game-winning touchdown to Dazz Newsome.
Tomon Fox had a big game against Miami, logging a career-high three sacks for 16 yards. His sack total was the highest by a Tar Heel since Kareem Martin had 3.5 against Pitt back in 2013. Fox also added six tackles to his stat line, and made the Hurricanes fumble once.
Both of these players gave the Tar Heels big-time performances, and the best is yet to come. Now that they are off to a 2-0 start, they’ll look forward to Friday when they take on Wake Forest in their first true road game of the season. Congrats to the both of them, and Go Heels!
