UNC Recruiting: Week of 1/27

After some big news last week, things settle down for the UNC head coaching titans

College football’s second signing day is coming up, and I believe that for the first time since the December Early Signing Day was implemented, we as UNC fans have just about nothing to be looking for. The staff seems to have adjusted focus about entirely to the class of 2021, the Heels have just one unsigned commit (more on that in a bit), and the class is already maxed out: Right now, the Heels are looking at a roster that’s four players over the scholarship limit once the 2020 signees step on campus. And on the basketball side, Roy Williams is making moves, too, and gets a nod of approval from a familiar face. Let’s get to it:

  • Frankly, this is a week where the biggest news we haven’t already covered is a ratings update, as 247 has adjusted their in-house ratings after All-American and other offseason games across the country have completed. It’s mostly good for UNC; three signees got their fourth star from the service after scouts got a look at them: wide receiver Josh Downs, who was the best player at just about everything he attended, linebacker Cedric Gray, and offensive lineman Cayden Baker. These bumps were enough to push UNC’s 2020 class to 18th in the country, moving ahead of South Carolina.
  • Elijah Burris is the Heels’ lone unsigned commit, for unknown reasons. His offer list isn’t particularly scary for UNC fans and on his end, he doesn’t look to have been putting feelers elsewhere. Maybe he just wanted to wait until February, maybe there are academics to sort out, maybe it’s something else, but he is essentially the only person that UNC fans have to pay attention to next Wednesday.
  • After what seems to have been a wildly successful Junior Day last week, one that led to the commitment of Power Echols, UNC’s hosting another one this weekend. There’s no word on who’s there, but hopefully we get similar results.

(Yes, that is indeed Coby’s brother)

  • Strangely, 247 still does not list Trevor Keels as one of UNC’s 2021 offers, even 9 days after his personal confirmation. Oh well. He’s made it onto my table, at least:
