UNC Recruiting week of 10/12: 2021 football commit Drake Maye to enroll early

One of the best quarterbacks in the country plans to get a head start on his college career this January.

Welcome to this week’s recruiting update! There isn’t a whole lot of football news to discuss this week other than what happened yesterday, but there are a couple of basketball nuggets that must be discussed. Let’s not waste anytime and get right into it.

Yesterday afternoon news broke that four-star 2021 quarterback Drake Maye will enroll at UNC in January. This move is in contrast to what his initial plans were, which involved finishing out his senior year of high school. There’s likely no other explanation for this needed other than the fact that instead of starting high school football in August the N.C. High School Athletic Association decided to postpone the entire season until February. Situations like this have pushed seniors to opt out of their last season of high school football, which is understandable considering the risk involved whenever they take the field. This is especially true in Maye’s case.

Last season Maye finished his junior season completing 210 of his 290 passes for 3,512 yards, 50 touchdowns, and two interceptions. Amazingly his numbers could’ve been even better, but in eight of his games Maye didn’t even play because the games were blowouts. He will leave Myers Park with a 25-3 record in his final two seasons. He is currently the 21st-best player in the country according to 247Sports, and the second-best pro quarterback.

Having the former Alabama commit arrive in Chapel Hill early should be great for getting him ready for next season. Presumably Sam Howell will have his last season in a Carolina uniform next year, and so Drake Maye and Jacoby Criswell will have to throw down to see who wins the starting quarterback spot in 2022.

  • In case you missed it, last week five-star 2021 shooting guard Bryce McGowens decommitted from Florida State for reasons unknown. When it happened Tar Heel fans began to ponder as to whether or not Roy Williams planned to reach out to him, and now we have our answer.

AllTarHeels reported Wednesday that their sources confirmed that McGowens has in fact been in contact with the Tar Heels. This isn’t incredibly surprising, as Roy Williams is always looking to add quality shooters to his roster. There will also be a potential hole left at the point guard position should Caleb Love enter the NBA Draft next spring, so McGowens would be able to fill that role immediately.

There is a a sizable list of schools that have reached out to McGowens since he decommitted. Here are all of his current suitors:

Needless to say, Roy Williams and his staff will have their work cut out for them in winning this recruiting battle. If they succeed, however, it will do wonders for their 2021 class.

  • It’s been a while since UNC has taken interest in an international prospect, but now it sounds like they have done just that. 2021 prospect and Finland native Mustapha Amzil has caught the eye of UNC’s staff, and according to Amzil himself they have requested a video from him. His family just moved to the United States from Finland a couple of weeks ago, and he currently plays for First Love Academy. He’s 6’10 and 215-lbs, and Rivals currently has him ranked as a five-star recruit.

In terms of what he can do on the court, here is what Amzil told Stock Risers about his game:

“I can play multiple positions and score on all levels. I like to get my teammates involved and I think my court-vision is good and I have a high-IQ. Rebounding is also one of my strengths. I need to improve on staying solid on the defensive end so I’m able to guard all positions and I’m constantly improving. I also need to keep my shot consistent.”

As we all know, it is hard for Roy Williams to turn down an elite big man. It would be surprising if an offer never came out of this situation, so it will be worth keeping an eye on Amzil as he navigates his recruitment.
