Now that National Signing Day is officially over, let’s take a look back

NCAA Football: Military Bowl-North Carolina vs Temple Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

National Signing Day has come and gone, and for UNC fans, there’s almost no difference between the before and after: Mack Brown still wrangled a top-20 class in his first year back, and since almost every one of his signees decided to sign in December and get the process done with, the Tar Heels were just about drama-free on Wednesday. On the basketball side, Roy Williams hasn’t been up to much since the last time I updated you. Let’s get to the nitty-gritty:

  • Check out Chad’s (non)-recap here for a fuller summary of the relevant points of NSD for UNC. Elijah Burris ended up signing with Hampton after a commitment to UNC that stretches back into the Fedora days, which could be best for all parties involved: An HBCU gets an ACC-level recruit, and UNC avoids furthering the logjam it’s building at the RB position.
  • Jordan Burch did eventually sign with the South Carolina Gamecocks, vaulting them back over UNC in the final 247 rankings. The Heels finish the 2020 cycle at 19th and with good momentum going into 2021.
  • They’ll have to maintain that momentum, however, without lead recruiter Tim Brewster, whom Inside Carolina reported will be leaving Chapel Hill for Dan Mullen’s Florida program. It’s a blow, particularly after how excited Brewster seemed to be in Chapel Hill, but it will pass. Fortunately, everybody he recruited has had 2 months, not less than 24 hours, of being NLI-signed Tar Heels, making their situations stabler. I wouldn’t have been surprised at some release requests from February signees, but UNC didn’t have any, so I think the team will be fine.

Take a good look: this will be the last week of the 2020 table on this feature.

  • A look through social media doesn’t reveal any visits by Roy Williams or his staff this week, so we’re still sitting on what I had last week: some interest in Kinston product Dontrez Styles, who is a solid bet to be Williams’ next 2021 offer. Kinston has been kind to him, as we all know. Styles holds offers from Clemson, Maryland, Louisville, and Pittsburgh, among others.
  • If you have access to The Athletic, Duke/UNC reporter Brendan Marks has a remarkable feature up about 2020 commit R.J. Davis, talking about his journey, his drive to succeed in spite of his stature, and more. It’s a great read and I recommend it if you have a subscription
