It’s been a while since we had a full-on recruiting recap! Sports news has slowed down to the point where we can give pretty much each event that would normally have landed here enough attention for its own article, but I figure that something like this is good just to keep the overall momentum of UNC’s football and basketball programs in perspective. Just because everybody’s stuck at home doesn’t mean coaches’ jobs are getting any easier, and it especially doesn’t mean that Roy Williams and Mack Brown, at the top of their fields before all this, have slowed down at all. Let’s get into it:
Football
- Since the double commitments of Raneira “Ra Ra” (rah-rah, not ray-ray, according to recruiting podcasts) Dillworth and Jared Wilson, nothing official has happened for the nation’s second-ranked class. Yeah, revel in that for a second.
- The next player to look out for in terms of UNC commitments is in-state four-star Jahvaree Ritzie, a defensive end from Kernersville. Ritzie put UNC in his top 5 on Sunday (alongside Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and Ohio State) and also tweeted this a couple weeks ago:
Sheesh this in state movement jumping !! #NC2UNC ?? New hashtag!!! ♂️
— Jahvaree Ritzie 5️⃣ (@jahvaree) April 17, 2020
He’s also shown some love to Tennessee on social media, but UNC looks to be in a strong position with him.
- This is also a cool Tweet, from commit Keeshawn Silver:

(not every one of those players is being pursued by UNC, and it’s unlikely they land Shipley and Page, but we love the energy)

Basketball
- The biggest news of the week, of course, was the completion of UNC’s 2020 class with the addition of Kerwin Walton. The sharpshooting “2” guard fills a spot that was badly needed on the roster and will look to have an immediate impact. UNC beat out Arizona for Walton’s services, adding to the 2020 revenge tour for Zeke Nnaji and Josh Green after Puff Johnson also spurned the Wildcats.
- Also of note was another offer being sent out to the 2021 class, which, because of the coronavirus, might be the first offer Roy Williams has sent out without seeing a player play live. Hunter Sallis, a combo guard out of Nebraska, reported on his Twitter that he has a UNC offer as of Monday. Sallis is ranked 30th in his class according to the 247 Composite, but is the 4th-ranked combo guard and 1st-ranked Nebraskan. Have some highlights:
- This keeps the number of viable UNC offers out to the 2021 class at 7, after Paolo Banchero left UNC out of his Top 6 on Tuesday.
- Kennedy Chandler, however, listed UNC in his own Top 5 yesterday, giving some hope that UNC’s recent elite point guard recruiting can continue. The Heels will be competing with Duke, Kentucky, Tennesee, and Memphis for the guard’s services.
