UNC Recruiting: Week of 5/18

Last night’s football commitment is the big news, but there’s other stuff going on in the recruiting world

Happy Gemini season, everybody! (Look, when we’re all home, you’ve gotta find anything to be able to celebrate) You’ll have seen our articles on the two big pieces of recruiting news for this week, but for everything else, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get into what UNC fans should know about this past week:

Football:

  • The big news of the week was the commitment of wide receiver J.J Jones, which Jake covered last night. Jones is a tall deep threat in the vein of Mack Hollins, in my opinion, and I think he’s the only non-elite (according to recruiting services) out-of-state guy Mack Brown’s staff have prioritized thus far, speaking volumes about how much they like him despite his rankings.
  • Defensive end prospect Zaire Patterson will be announcing his destination on Tuesday. Like I said last week, nobody really knows with him, but when Clemson’s in a battle, it’s a good bet that they’ll win it. Can’t rule out UNC with the absurd in-state momentum they’ve got going on, though.
  • 247 updated their rankings for defensive prospects earlier this week, to the benefit of several UNC commits. Most notable was RaRa Dillworth, jumping nearly 100 spots in 247’s in-house rankings to join the top 150 players in the country and the 8th-ranked outside linebacker. You’ll see that reflected below, but not replicated, because we use 247’s Composite position ranking, not their in-house ranking - he’s jumped from 18th to 12th. Jahvahree Ritzee also saw a noticeable bump.

Basketball

  • The big news here is Roy Williams’ second offer to a local ballplayer in the Class of 2021, D’Marco Dunn out of Fayetteville. I covered that when it happened, but the long and short is that Dunn is a shooter and a winner, and both of those are things you can’t have enough of. We’ll see how this recruitment progresses, as Dunn has been racking up offers recently.
  • Patrick Baldwin, the wing ranked 3rd overall in the class, recently discussed his Top 10 in depth with Evan Daniels. His Top 10 are UNC, Duke, UW-Milwaukee (where his father, Pat Baldwin Sr, is head coach), Virginia, Wisconsin, Georgetown, Kentucky, Northwestern, Michigan, and UCLA. Of interest here is that he lists UNC as one of the five (four if you don’t count his dad) schools recruiting him the hardest, and mentions recent pro wings like Cam Johnson and Justin Jackson as positives about UNC, as well as Roy Williams’ history of player development. It’s hard to know where this recruitment is headed at all, but those aren’t bad signs.
