Welcome to summer! With the solstice having occurred last week, we’re now officially in the hottest part of the year, and that much closer to UNC’s fall athletes getting on campus for summer classes and training camp. Meanwhile, though, UNC’s coaches are still working the recruiting trail, with Courtney Banghart securing another five-star talent and Mack Brown aiming to get one himself. Let’s get into it:
Football:
- The biggest news in football recruiting right now concerns UNC, as five-star cornerback Tony Grimes changed his decision date from December 1st to June 30th - 4 days from now. There was some speculation that an early commitment could lead to Grimes graduating from high school early and reclassifying to the 2020 class, but according to Dawg Nation, since the state of Virginia will resume high school sports this fall, that’s no longer happening. Both Rivals and 247 overwhelmingly predict that the Tidewater product will commit to UNC, getting cornerbacks coach Dre Bly a huge recruiting win in his home area. The addition of Grimes would virtually secure UNC’s 2021 class’ spot in the top 15, likely the top 10, and put the nation on notice that Mack Brown and staff are in the hunt for elite out-of-state talent, too. We’ll have more on this if/when it happens.
- After that, be on the lookout for fellow Virginia Beach-area outside linebacker George Wilson, whose commitment date is July 12th. He’s not a lock for UNC, but it’s not unlikely, either. He’d also be a huge addition to the squad, which doesn’t have a ton of pass rushers lined up past incoming blue-chipper Desmond Evans.

Basketball:
- Courtney Banghart is making serious moves. UNC’s 2021 women’s basketball class might end up being one of the best in program history - UNC hasn’t recruited three five-star players in a class since 2013, and that’s just the start of Banghart’s first full class with the Heels. Soon after getting commitments from wing players Destiny Adams and Teonni Key, Banghart struck again with the pledge of five-star guard Morasha Wiggins, from Kalamazoo, Michigan:
Overly happy to say i’m 110% committed to North Carolina pic.twitter.com/u1bLVBrT3c

Wiggins, the 50th-ranked prospect in her class according to HoopGurlz, is a certified bucket-getter from all three levels who will complement UNC’s new style and her fellow incoming recruits perfectly. This class is shaping up to be really exciting.
- On the men’s side, there’s not much new to report, as Roy Williams is likely using this time at home both to further his connections to the prospects he’s already offered and to survey from a distance those he’s considering. We know how selective Williams is with his offers, and how much he hates offering a player he hasn’t really talked to, so we really have no idea of knowing what’s going on from the program side. From the players’ side, there hasn’t been much news either - no new Top Whatever lists, no interesting interviews, nothing. We’ll update you when we get something to update you on.
