UNC Recruiting Week of 7/13: Roy Williams offers five-star 2021 PF Jabari Smith

The rona may have taken out sports, but it can’t stop the recruiting machine.

If you are one of those people that stay locked into recruiting news, things definitely haven’t been impacted much when it comes to Carolina football and basketball. Sure, some of the spring/summer events and leagues that usually happen were canceled due to COVID, but that hasn’t kept Mack Brown and Roy Williams from getting out some offers to some high-profile recruits.

With that said, guess what news we have for you today? More recruiting offers! Let’s take a look at what both coaches have been doing.

Football

Mack Brown extended an offer this week to 2021 Miami Hurricanes commit Andres Borregales. Borregales is the second-best kicker in the country out of Hollywood, FL, and currently plays for Chaminade-Madonna Prep. His recruiting process has stayed relatively open since committing to the Hurricanes, which led to Brown and special teams coordinator Jovan Dewitt extending a scholarship to him.

When it comes to kickers there’s usually not a whole lot of film to break down. What is worth noting however is that Borregales converted 12 of his 15 field goals this past fall with this longest make being from 57 yards away. As far as his PAT tries go, he was able to make 57 out of 59. Needless to say, it’d be great if UNC could lock down a kid with a solid leg to precede Noah Ruggles who is going into his senior year at Carolina.

How much to expect from this offer is hard to say, but it sounds like there is enough interaction happening between Brown and Borregales that it’s worth keeping an eye on. For right now though, it shouldn’t be shocking if he decides to stay committed to Miami.

Basketball

Earlier this morning our newest writer Michael McKay discussed the scholarship offer Roy Williams made to 2022 five-star prospect Mark Mitchell. However, that was not the only offer that Roy Williams extended this week. 2021 five-star power forward Jabari Smith is the latest top-five prospect to receive a scholarship offer from UNC. This now means that Williams has extended offers to the first, second, third, and fourth-best players in the country in the 2021 cycle.

Jabari Smith is a 6’10 power forward that currently plays for Sandy Creek high school in Tyrone, GA. He is the fourth-best player in the country, and is the second-best power forward according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Scouts say that he is a face up shooter that has a smooth stroke that has the range to knock down shots from the perimeter. When it comes to his current build, there is room for improvement, but ultimately he is a player with first-round draft pick talent that would be a great get for the Tar Heels should they manage to earn a commitment from him.

As it currently stands four-star power forward Dontrez Styles remains the lone commitment in the 2021 class. It’ll be anybody’s guess as to how this class shakes out, as this has been a very unusual recruiting process for players and coaches alike. The 247Sports Crystal Ball currently isn’t very kind to the Tar Heels, but there is plenty of time for that to change. Roy Williams definitely has his work cut out for him, but as we have all learned in the past, it’s a better practice not to doubt him and to sit back and witness him work his magic.
