UNC Class of 2021 commit Dontrez Styles and the Tea Marie Hoops were in action yesterday at Big Shots Nationals, the third iteration of Big Shots-hosted summer tournaments. The previous two were in Myrtle Beach, SC. Tea Marie Hoops defeated B. Maze Elite (sponsored by former Tennessee Volunteer Bobby Maze), handing them their first loss of the summer.

Styles was getting some national-level attention during the game. ESPN’s Paul Biancardi was in Rock Hill and had high praise for the Tar Heel commit:

The video in Biancardi’s clip shows the game’s final possession with Tea Marie Hoops down one. Styles, on the right wing, draws a double-team and passes out of it quickly, which sets off an extended series of excellent ball movement, resulting in an easy game winning lay-up.

The game can be watched in its entirety at https://www.bigshots.net/nationals. There is no direct link to the games, but if you go to the homepage provided and scroll down past the tournament information brief and all of the “Safety Protocol” information, you’ll see all of the games that have been played so far in the video section. Dontrez Styles played in the “ARENA 9:00 BMAZE ELITE V TEA MARIE HOOPS” link. He is #11 in neon green.

Be forewarned, the video quality is spotty, and there are portions of the game film that are discolored or completely washed out. On Twitter, you can see some better footage at a lower angle from @bkcheel, who was at the game and took statistics. According to the Big Shots statistics page, Styles finished with 21 points with 6 made free throws. These summer league statistics are not terribly reliable, though.

Styles’ shooting certainly looks promising, especially his free throws, a common Tar Heel bugaboo. What do you see in his game that makes Dontrez Styles an exciting Carolina prospect? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
