UNC Men’s Soccer: Second Team Tar Heel XI

Fans are voting to determine the best players in program history.

2011 National Player of the Year Ben Speas

In mid-June, the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s soccer program launched a fan vote to determine the best players in program history. The all-time team will be named the “Tar Heel XI.”

Over the course of four weeks in June and July, fans voted on Twitter for their choice of midfielders, forwards, defenders, and goalkeepers.

This week, UNC announced the Second Team Tar Heel XI, with the Tar Heel XI to be announced on July 29.

Below is the Second Team Tar Heel XI, including career highlights. Via UNC Athletics:

Goalkeeper

Michael Ueltschey (1998-01)

  • 2001 National Champion
  • Second all-time in program history with 29 shutouts
  • Competed in the MLS for two seasons

Don Cogsville (1985-88)

  • Competed in the MISL for two seasons
  • Earned six caps in 1988 as part of the United States National Team

Matt Hedges (2011)

  • 2011 All-America
  • 2011 National Champion
  • Captain of FC Dallas
  • Earned five caps with USNT from 2015-17
  • Voted twice onto the MLS Best XI
  • 2016 MLS Defender of the Year
