Ordinarily, August is a pretty busy recruiting month, because of the subset of high schoolers who want to have their decision made before the school year starts and they’re distracted by school — especially for football, whose season is about to start as school starts. But this year, there’s enough distraction that this isn’t necessarily the case. UNC’s just about done with the 2021 football class, apparently, and its basketball targets all seem to be happy to take their time at least into the fall. But let’s get into what we do know:
Football:
- After the NCHSAA’s announcement that high school football will be delayed until at least February of next year, we started seeing a wave of UNC’s 2021 class saying they’d be enrolling early despite not being able to play their senior seasons. Since a vast majority of the class is from North Carolina, they’re all affected by this. So far, Jahvaree Ritzie, Raneira Dillworth, Power Echols, Dontavius Nash, and Keeshawn Silver have announced that they will forgo their senior season of football, as has J.J. Jones, who’s from South Carolina but will have similar constraints. Others are likely to follow.
- Notably, Drake Maye told the Charlotte Observer a few weeks ago that he was committed to playing his senior season no matter when it’s played, so that’s an offseason of prep he’ll lose in the fight to replace Sam Howell in 2022.

Basketball
- Point guard Kennedy Chandler will be announcing his commitment decision about 2 hours from the publication of this article, apparently on SportsCenter as well as on his Instagram Live. UNC is in his Top 6, but signs are pointing towards him staying in his home state and choosing Tennessee.
- Skyy Clark has announced that he’s staying in the 2022 class amid talk of reclassifying, which only helps UNC’s chances. Kentucky is still the odds-on favorite for his services, but especially if he stays in ‘22, this from Corey Evans’ roundup is promising: “I believe [reclassifying] would be in favor of Kentucky but do not sleep on North Carolina with Clark.”
