UNC Recruiting: Week of 8/3

The rare flip away from Mack Brown, and the hope to replace what was lost

NCAA Football: Military Bowl-North Carolina vs Temple Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a week, huh? It can’t just be me for whom the first week of August has felt particularly taxing in this post-Covid world. Anyways, recruiting isn’t exempt from a crazy week, as UNC saw its first decommitment of the 2021 football class. In basketball, things continue to boil under the surface. Let’s get into it:

Football:

  • Offensive lineman Jared Wilson, who previously flipped to UNC from Georgia amidst a coaching shakeup at his position at UGA, announced on Monday that he was re-committing to Georgia. In the broad sense, this isn’t really unexpected; Covid-19 has set the stage for a ton of decommitments and flips as people’s initial urges to stay near home will inevitably get softened if and when restrictions soften. And that it was a player who previously flipped to UNC isn’t surprising, either. It’s unfortunate, though; Wilson was a good prospect.
  • To replace him, I had my eye on Yousef Mugharbil, but he looks more Virginia-bound now. That’s probably why the staff offered Diego Pounds, the next-ranked North Carolina offensive lineman. It’s late for a 2021 offer, but with Mack Brown’s in-state work, anything’s possible.
  • If not Pounds, Bryson Nesbit might be the next commit to fall; the class really doesn’t have too many targets and his recruitment has gone on for a while. His Crystal Balls are universally to South Carolina but I wouldn’t count the Heels out here.

Basketball

  • Class of 2022 lead guard Skyy Clark will be releasing a Top 7 on Friday. Kentucky fans and media look pretty confident about him, but it is early yet and UNC’s got a good record with point guards with hard “C” names recently.
  • Last week, I mentioned Harrison Ingram’s Top 6. Rivals’ Corey Evans helpfully clarified this Top 6 into tiers in his Wednesday mailbag: Stanford and Purdue as the favorites, UNC and Michigan with fighting chances, and Harvard and Howard having some catching up to do. That mostly tracks with what we already knew, and it means campus visits will probably have to be possible before UNC has a chance in this one.
