Tonight, North Carolina running back Javonte Williams was selected in the second round by the Denver Broncos. He is the first Tar Heel to be drafted out of a handful of names that we expect to hear called tonight and tomorrow.
During his junior season with the Tar Heels, Williams carried the ball 157 times for 1,140 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground, and caught 25 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns. Though he split duties with another running back in this draft, Michael Carter, he was arguably the most dominant of the duo purely because of his aggressive play. This past season it was nearly impossible to take him down on the first tackle attempt, and he ran with a level of violence that we hadn’t seen in Chapel Hill in quite some time.
Prior to the draft experts discussed the prospect of potentially drafting Williams in the first round. NFL executives loved how he played, One executive in the AFC stated that he thought that Williams was the best running back in the draft, which says a lot in a draft class that has Clemson star Travis Etienne and Alabama’s Najee Harris. Now that he is with the Broncos, I would expect to see him be an immediate impact player on the football field, and I’m sure it won’t be long before we are having to fight to draft him in your fantasy football leagues.
Congratulations to Javonte Williams, and best of luck at the next level!
