UNC Football: Sam Howell is a Walter Camp preseason first-team All-American

That’s my quarterback! ***sheds tear***

UNC quarterback Sam Howell is projected to have yet another spectacular season, and more than likely will receive a lot of attention from the national media as he prepares to more than likely enter the NFL Draft next spring. Thankfully, however, we did not have to wait long to find out who would be the first to put him on their preseason All-American list, as he is now officially on the board.

Yesterday, Sam Howell was named preseason first-team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

For those that aren’t familiar with the foundation, it was established in 1967 to not only select players for its annual All-American football team, but to provide donations to worthy charities and youth-oriented organizations across the country. This year’s list is the 132nd edition, as it goes way back to the first time that Walter Camp named his first All-American team in 1889.

So far in his career, Sam Howell has thrown for 7,227 yards, 68 touchdowns, and has connected on 64.4% of his throws. Over the last month there has been a lot of talk about Howell as a draft prospect, being compared to Cleveland Brown’s Baker Mayfield quite a bit. While there is concern about his habit of locking into his initial read and forcing passes into traffic, it is his ability to make tough throws and his ability to mobilize in the pocket that stands out to scouts. Following the 2020 season Howell lost Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome to the NFL Draft, but there are still enough weapons on this team to help send Howell off to the draft on a high note. 2021 should be the year that UNC solidifies their place on the national college football stage, and all of their success will begin and end with how far Sam Howell can take them.

Considering the fact that Howell has landed on his first list in the middle of June, it’s hard to believe that this is the first time that we hear his name on a preseason list. We will more than likely witness the hype surrounding him increase in the coming months as the Tar Heels prepare to take over the Coastal division, and hopefully de-throne the Clemson Tigers. Congrats to Sam Howell on being a preseason first-team All-American!

Go Heels!
