The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s tennis team had another successful season.
UNC started the year off right by winning the 2021 ITA National Team Indoor championship in February. This success translated into a 21-4 record on the season and no. 6 in the final national team rankings.
After a runner-up finish in the ACC Tournament, Carolina made their 29th overall appearance in the NCAA men’s tennis championship. This season marked their seventh appearance in a row.
The Tar Heels made it to the Round of 16 until losing by a match to Georgia.
Carolina finished the season as the highest ranked ACC team by one spot. Virginia is no. 7 in the final polls.
Six Tar Heels earned final national rankings- four in singles and two doubles teams:
Singles
- No. 14 William Blumberg (14-4)
- No. 22 Rinky Hijikata (15-3)
- No. 62 Benjamin Sigouin (10-10)
- No. 66 Brian Cernoch (20-5)
Doubles
- No. 4 William Blumberg & Brian Cernoch (16-4)
- No. 62 Mac Kiger & Simon Soendergaard (12-8)
Blumberg finishes a decorated career at North Carolina. He is the first 10-time All-America in ITA history, earning All-American honors in singles and doubles five times each. Blumberg also earned All-ACC honors.
Cernoch earned doubles honors alongside Blumberg. The duo goes back-to-back in years with All-American honors. Cernoch also added a second team All-ACC honor to his season.
Sophomore Hijikata is trying to follow in Blumberg’s footsteps. He earned All-America honors in singles and landed on the All-ACC First Team.
Sigouin finishes off the 2021 trophy shelf with a spot on the All-ACC Third Team.
Congratulations to the Tar Heels on their accomplishments this year!
