UNC Women’s Basketball vs South Carolina: How to Watch & Game Thread

Highly anticipated doesn’t begin to cover it

Syndication: The Herald-Times Rich Janzaruk/Herald-Times / USA TODAY NETWORK

Carmichael Arena hosts one of its most highly anticipated games in many years tonight, as the legendary Dawn Staley and her #1-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks come to Chapel Hill to take on Courtney Banghart and the UNC Tar Heels as part of the inaugural ACC-SEC Women’s Basketball Challenge. The buzz around this game is palpable, with UNC publicizing in recent days how they had to apportion student tickets by lottery (a measure usually reserved for in-conference men’s games), the first appearance of UNC’s pregame Tip-Off Club at Carmichael, and, ultimately, a sold-out crowd that I’ll be interested to see the makeup of. Not to disparage the usual level of fan support for the women’s squad in Carmichael, which is awesome — but tonight might be the closest thing we’ve gotten in many years to the atmosphere that Carmichael was famous for when Dean Smith was coaching the men’s team.

The Heels are coming off a rough time at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida, where after seemingly having improved their offensive capability and consistency over last year through four games, baskets simply did not fall for the Heels. After fighting back in the fourth quarter for a gutsy win against Vermont, the Heels lost their next two games to #16 Kansas State and Florida Gulf Coast, both close decisions. Banghart’s squad returns to Carmichael hoping to right the ship, and collect their 5th win over a top-5 opponent in the past 5 years in doing so. South Carolina is favored by 28 points, but that’s almost a compliment, given that they beat then-#10 Notre Dame by 29 and then-#14 Maryland by 38.

If you’re making the trip to Carmichael, a) I’m jealous, and b) wear blue for the team’s announced blue-out! If you’re not, here’s how to catch the Heels in action tonight.
