AP Poll: Week of 12/11

The UNC men hung onto their top ten ranking this week.

NCAA Basketball: Jimmy V Classic-North Carolina at Connecticut Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The college football regular season officially came to an end over the weekend with the annual Army-Navy game, and we’re now just days away from the deluge of games in bowl season. However currently, we’re in a bit of a dead period, meaning college basketball has a chance for a bigger stage over the past week or so. That included both North Carolina Tar Heels basketball teams, who each met up for a high profile game against UConn, although both ended disappointingly.

With that and all the rest of the action from last week in the books, let’s check in on where that left things in the AP Top 25 polls.

Men’s Basketball

AP Top 25

  1. Arizona (62 first place votes)
  2. Kansas
  3. Purdue
  4. Houston (1)
  5. UConn
  6. Baylor
  7. Marquette
  8. Creighton
  9. North Carolina
  10. Gonzaga
  11. Oklahoma

  25. Northwestern

Where is UNC?

Despite taking that loss to UConn, the Tar Heels didn’t end up moving anywhere in the poll, staying in the exact #9 spot they were in last week. Losing at a neutral site to the reigning and potentially future national champions isn’t that bad of a loss.

Biggest Winners

Clemson is one of the few remaining unbeaten teams in the country, which has included wins over power conference teams in their last four games. As a result, the Tigers jumped up 11 spots, cracking the Top 15 this week.

Biggest Losers

Miami made their first ever Final Four last season and came into this season with decently big expectation. While they’ve mostly been solid so far this year, a blowout loss to Colorado saw them drop nine spots, only just hanging onto a Top 25 spot.

Where is UNC?

Despite taking another loss and falling to 6-4 on the season, the Tar Heels have hung onto a Top 25 spot just barely. They finished just 12 ranking points ahead of Washington to get the #25 position.

Biggest Winners

Not a ton of big changes in the upper half of the poll this week. The biggest gainer was UNLV, who went from just out of the Top 25 to #23.

Biggest Losers

Similarly, not much change as far as teams falling. Penn State was the biggest loser in this regard, going from #25 to just getting a handful of votes having lost two-straight games.
