Friday night’s National Women’s Soccer League Draft saw six Tar Heels selected, matching the NWSL record for most players chosen from a single school. Carolina had players drafted across the board, but most noticeably heard their players’ names called for the first two picks.

Ally Sentnor, the ACC midfielder of the year and a third-team All-America, was selected first overall by Utah Royals FC. She led UNC last season in goals (11) and assists (7).

Defender Savy King went #2 to the expansion club Bay FC, becoming their first-ever draft pick. In her only season in Chapel Hill, she impressed enough to make the All-ACC Second Team after starting all 23 games for Carolina.

All-America defender Maycee Bell recovered from a torn meniscus suffered in 2022 and impressed enough to be selected by NJ/NY Gotham FC in the first round, 14th overall pick.

Defensive Midfielder Sam Meza went to Seattle Reign in the second round, 17th overall pick and forward Avery Patterson went to the Houston Dash two picks later. Meza finished her senior season on the All-ACC Second Team, and Patterson was a Third-Team All-America, All-ACC First Team, finishing the season with 9 goals and 2 assists.

NC Courage took a waiver on local hero and two-sport superstar Julia Dorsey, who did not play this past season after sustaining an injury in the 2023 lacrosse season. Dorsey is a defender who you may remember scoring the winning goal in the 2022 national semi-final against Florida State, and for being an absolute tank in the national championship game, playing 110 minutes before Carolina got jobbed by UCLA.

UNC’s women’s soccer team has seen a mass exodus this off-season, with several notable transfers and decisions to go pro. On the evidence of the NWSL Draft, it looks like that was a wise choice! Good luck in your professional careers Tar Heels!
