AP Top 25: Week of 1/1

New year, new rankings.

NCAA Basketball: Charleston Southern at North Carolina Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to 2024! With bowl season set to wrap up soon, it’s time for the college basketball season to truly kick into gear. Before we know it, we’ll be sitting here watching North Carolina Tar Heels’ annual battles with Duke and then the ACC and NCAA Tournaments.

However, we still have a little bit to go before then, and plenty of basketball action left in the season. So with that in mind, let’s check in on how this season continues to shape up and check in on this week’s AP Top 25 rankings.

Where is UNC?

The Tar Heels handled Charleston Southern with ease in their only game this week. Meanwhile as a result of games elsewhere, Carolina was able to move up a bit. UNC jumped up one spot and are now #8.

Biggest Winners

While we’ll get to the big fall-ers in a second, there wasn’t too many big jumps up this week. Memphis’ four-spot rise was the biggest in that regard, which comes on the heels of a six-game win streak, including three ranked victories.

Biggest Losers

Arizona’s six-spot fall, and Florida Atlantic’s 10-spot one were big, but Gonzaga’s 11-spot drop topped everyone this week. The Bulldogs fell to #24 and just barely hung onto a place in the top 25. The Zaga only just managed to keep their streak of 142-straight weeks in the poll alive.

Where is UNC?

Through no fault of their own — at least not one from this week — the Tar Heels have dropped out of the Top 25. They were at #24 last week, but jumps from West Virginia and Syracuse have seen UNC just miss out and lead the way in the “Others Receiving Votes” section.

Biggest Winners

After taking down previously #5 and unbeaten Texas, Baylor led the way among the gainers this week. The Bears just missed out on taking the Longhorns spot in the top five, moving up four spots to settle at #6.

Biggest Losers

On the flipside, Texas’ drop was the biggest of the week. UT went from the top five to barely in the top ten, coming in exactly at #10.
