AP Top 25: Week of 1/8

Both Tar Heel teams moved in the positive direction this week.

NCAA Womens Basketball: North Carolina at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Last week was a pretty good one on the whole for North Carolina Tar Heels basketball. Between the men and women, UNC teams went 4-0, each beating ranked teams. In the women’s case, they beat two ranked teams in their two games. As a result, both sit at 3-0 in ACC play and tied atop the league.

Before their action for this week kicks off, let’s check in on where the Tar Heels stand in the latest AP Top 25s.

Where is UNC?

After the road wins at Pitt and Clemson, the Tar Heels were on the move up again this week. Carolina moved up one spot from last week and now sit at #7 in the country.

Biggest Winners

Auburn’s been a regular team around the Top 25 in recent seasons, but they only just cracked it this season for the first time last week. Over the weekend, they absolutely obliterated Arkansas, and as a result, they jumped way up this way, and now sit solidly at #16.

Biggest Losers

James Madison and Ole Miss both fell out of the poll after having their unbeaten seasons finally end. Meanwhile, last year’s surprise Final Four team Florida Atlantic took another iffy loss, and have fallen all the way to #24.

Where is UNC?

Last week, the Tar Heels dropped out of the Top 25, not through much of their doing and more to do with other teams jumping them. However, a week and two ranked wins later, Carolina is back and at #20 this week.

Biggest Winners

UNC’s six spot jump was actually the biggest of any team this week by a decent sized margin. Ohio State had the next biggest one, and they only moved up three.

Biggest Losers

One of Carolina’s wins came over Syracuse, which knocked them from #25 to a couple spots out of the rankings. Of teams that managed to stay ranked, Marquette’s four spot fall was the biggest.
