UNC Basketball: Vanderbilt forward Ven-Allen Lubin commits to Carolina

Hubert Davis gets SEC experience to shore up UNC’s frontcourt.

After a couple of high profile misses in the transfer portal, UNC finally began to plug their holes in the post with the commitment of Vanderbilt forward Ven-Allen Lubin.

The 6’8” forward is an interesting piece to add to a Carolina team long on perimeter talent, but short on post experience. Armando Bacot is gone, and it appears less and less likely by the day that Harrison Ingram will return for his senior season in Chapel Hill. Enter Ven-Allen Lubin.

A bit on the shorter side (like Ingram) he makes up for his standing height with a 7’1” wingspan and ferocious appetite for boards. He played as an undersized center for Vanderbilt under UNC legend Jerry Stackhouse, averaging 12.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg last season, but really started putting together some top performances in the SEC Tournament, averaging 23 ppg and 10.5 rpg.

As Carolina’s offense continues to evolve under Hubert Davis, it will be interesting to see what the team looks like without an old-school anchor in the middle. With the addition of Lubin, those changes aren’t perfectly clear yet. He has shown he can play at center, but would he be better suited at power forward? Will Hubert Davis chase another center in the portal, or will he look to play Jalen Washington more minutes? Possibilities abound, but none of them jump off the page as the obvious answer.

What do you think about Ven-Allen Lubin’s fit with Carolina? Who else would you like to see Hubert Davis pursue to layer talent on next year’s team? Let us know in the comments.
