After the North Carolina Tar Heels women’s doubles team lost in the 2024 NCAA Doubles Championship quarterfinals, the program’s season has ended.
Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig were the last Tar Heels standing for the women’s tennis team.
This year’s Division I Women’s Doubles Championship was hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The championship starts with the Round of 32. Crawley and Tanguilig faced off against Alabama in the opening round, and won 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(9).
The pair took on ACC foes Florida State in the Round of 16, and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
On Thursday, during the Quarterfinals, Carolina drew the overall number-one seed in the doubles championship. Unfortunately, Crawley and Tanguilig lost to the Pepperdine pair 6-2, 6-2.
Earlier in the week, Carolina’s five players competed in the Singles Championship. Crawley, Tanguilig, Elizabeth Scotty, Reilly Tran, and Anika Yarlagadda made the bracket.
Crawley and Scott won in the Round of 64 before losing in the next round. Yarlagadda won two matches before falling in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.
Despite these losses, UNC had a successful season.
The Tar Heels won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship back in April. During the conference championship, Crawley and Tanguilig upset the seventh-ranked Virginia pair.
The championship allowed Carolina to host matches in Chapel Hill for the NCAA Team Championship. UNC made it to the third round before losing to the eventual national champion, Texas A&M.
Next year’s team will have a new look as Carolina loses six seniors. These players contributed to a national championship, two ACC championships, 545 career singles wins, and 463 doubles wins.
