If this is what these two teams do in the opener, what on Earth will today bring?
Both LSU and UNC had to battle back against pesky lower seeds in their first game of the Chapel Hill Regional. LSU was down 3-1 to Wofford until the bottom of the 8th,scored two in that frame and then Steven Milam rocketed a shot out of Boshamer to complete the comeback in the ninth give the Tigers the win. Not to be outdone, Carolina decided they needed to surrender a 5-3 lead over two innings and score six runs in the bottom of the ninth to stun an upset-minded LIU Sharks squad.
So it may have taken a little more drama than was expected, but we will get the showcase matchup this evening. Number one seed in the region and four seed overall UNC will face the second seeded Tigers to see who will get to sit back to wait and play Sunday night. The loser immediately has to turn around and try to win three in a row in order to advance to next weekend’s Super Regional. First they’ll have to win an early Sunday elimination game, then play again a few hours later against whomever won this game, and then beat them again on Monday as this is a double elimination tournament.
The Tigers will start Luke Holman, who many feel is their Ace and is likely going to be a high MLB draft pick. Holman had a six-inning no-hitter in the SEC Tournament last week against Kentucky, and is a strikeout machine. The Tar Heels, meanwhile, will likely start usual Saturday starter Shea Sprague, who managed to limit a dangerous Wake Forest team to two runs last Friday.
Boshamer will be stuffed to the gills as both games were full of fans, and LSU showed they travelled well as usual. Tar Heel fans showed out on Friday night, so it’ll be interesting to see once and for all just who snapped up all those tickets when the books went on sale on Wednesday. Either way, based on both crowds it’s going to be loud Saturday Night.
If you want to go, you’ll either have to pay an absurd price on the secondary market or show up before the Standing Room Only tickets go on sale 90 minutes ahead of first pitch—so about 3:30. If that doesn’t sound appealing to you, here’s how you can catch the action:
Time: 5:00 PM Eastern
Location: Boshamer Stadium, Chapel Hill, NC
TV/Streaming: ESPN 2. The game will also stream on the ESPN App and Watch ESPN. Mike Monaco and Gaby Sanchez will try to recover from two amazing comebacks to call the action.
Radio: Tar Heel Sports Network, with Dave Nathan on the call. Here’s a list of local affiliates, or you can listen online at GoHeels.com.
