As Hubert Davis makes moves to modernize UNC basketball in line with the spacing and shooting associated with the NBA, it’s hard to not look at the DNA of your program and yearn for the pieces that make you who you are.
What has Carolina been more than anything during Hubert’s time on the bench as a Roy Williams assistant? Dominant in the paint. What do you need to dominate the paint? Players like Kendre’ Harrison.
Harrison, a four-star basketball recruit (and a five-star football recruit), began the Nike EYBL Peach Jam tournament with a dominant performance for CP3 in a 64-55 win over The Family. He scored 20 points on 8-15 shooting (4-6 free throws) and hauled down 12 rebounds. Those numbers are certainly eye-opening, but look at the manner in which he collected them:

Harrison was a man amongst boys against The Family. You can hear echoes of Sean May, Tyler Hansbrough, Garrison Brooks, and Armando Bacot in that post play. Harrison has a complete disregard for opponents in the paint. He only cares about the ball, grabbing it, and putting it into the basket, often violently.
Stretch fours and pick-and-pops are cool, but when Hubert Davis sees this play, he can’t ignore his own program’s nature. He wants to dominate post play, and a player like Harrison can help him do that.
Throw in the fact that Kendre’ Harrison is a stronger football player than basketball player and you can expect to have him on campus for at least three years, he becomes that much more tantalizing a recruit. Schools like Georgia and Alabama can point to more gridiron success, but Carolina can give the Reidsville, NC native a chance to play at home, mix it up in the paint like former Tar Heel greats, and play football in a program that is doing exciting things at the tight end position.
Hubert Davis and Mack Brown should conduct end-of-day conferences every night before they go to bed to make sure they’re doing everything possible to get Harrison to Chapel Hill in the next two years. He is a difference maker for both programs.
