AP Top 25 Poll - Week 10: Free Fallin’

A winless week drops the Tar Heels.

What a week for the Top 25. There were 14 ranked teams that lost last week, and two of those lost twice, including the North Carolina Tar Heels.

With two “quality losses” in a week when a lot of other teams lost, it could have been much worse for Carolina.

Villanova is back on top of the Top 25. Take a look at the rest of the poll:

  1. Villanova: 14-1 (52)
  2. West Virginia: 14-1 (12)
  3. Virginia: 14-1 (1)
  4. Michigan State: 15-2
  5. Purdue: 15-2
  6. Wichita State: 13-2
  7. Duke: 13-2
  8. Texas Tech: 14-1
  9. Oklahoma: 12-2
  10. Xavier: 15-2
  11. Arizona State: 13-2
  12. Kansas: 12-3
  13. Seton Hall: 14-2
  14. Cincinnati: 14-2
  15. Gonzaga: 14-3
  16. TCU: 13-2
  17. Arizona: 12-4
  18. Miami (FL): 13-2
  19. Clemson: 14-1
  20. North Carolina: 12-4
  21. Kentucky: 12-3
  22. Auburn: 14-1
  23. Florida State: 12-3
  24. Tennessee: 10-4
  25. Creighton: 13-3

Where is UNC?

December 22, 2014. The Tar Heels were ranked No. 20 in the Week 7 poll for the 2014-15 season, and that was the last time Carolina was this low in the polls.

Biggest Winners

Texas Tech won for the first time ever in Allen Fieldhouse. The Red Raiders never trailed against then-No. 10 Kansas. Texas Tech’s win against Kansas on the road and their home win versus Kansas State moved them up 10 spots.

Purdue tallied two home conference wins to stay at the top of the Big 10. The Boilermakers’ wins against Rutgers and Nebraska were their tenth and eleventh straight, moving them up eight spots.

Seton Hall held on against St. John’s at home, then went to Indianapolis and overcame an 11-point deficit to beat Butler. The Pirates moved up eight in the poll.

Auburn beat two ranked teams, Tennessee and Arkansas, to move into the Top 25. Creighton’s two conference wins pushed them back into the poll.

Biggest Losers

Unfortunately, Carolina is one of the biggest losers this week. Fortunately, the losses came against ranked opponents on the road, and UNC lost the most spots while still remaining ranked.

Arizona State dropped seven spots after their overtime road loss to Colorado and a mere three point victory against Utah.

Texas A&M is on a three-game losing streak, and fell from the rankings after home losses to Florida and LSU last week. Road losses to Mississippi State and Auburn dropped Arkansas from the polls.
