The Tar Heels might be gaining the attention of three-star athlete Dazz Newsome.
While on his official visit to Chapel Hill, the Hampton, Virginia resident announced his official decommitment from the University of Maryland on Saturday. Newsome committed in October after being recruited by Mike London, who has since taken the head coaching job at Howard.
At this point, Newsome is left to consider two schools in UNC and Virginia Tech, where he will take another official visit later this month. Indications remain that the Hokies are the favorite, but him making his decision while with UNC must count for something, right?
The five-foot-ten, 165-pound talent is ranked as the no. 81 athlete in the 2017 class. He is also considered the no. 35 prospect out of Virginia. Newsome is expected to play cornerback at college and would join four-star cornerback Tre Shaw if he were to join the Tar Heels.

After the loss of Des Lawrence to graduation, UNC will need more depth at the cornerback position going forward. Junior M.J. Stewart will return for his senior year in 2017, but there will be plenty of opportunity for playing time next season. Newsome would be competing with four-star cornerback Tre Shaw if he were to join the program.
