UNC football recruiting: Dazz Newsome names Tar Heels in his top three

Last week we reported that 2017 athlete Dazz Newsome had decommitted from the University of Maryland while on his official visit with the Tar Heels. It was big news for UNC’s chances to bring the three-star talent to Chapel Hill. Now things are beginning to take shape as Newsome releases his top three schools. Among those to make the cut are North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia Tech.

As we’ve said before, the Hokies remain the favorite, but UNC still has a fair shot if we take the timing of his decommittment seriously. The Heels have already missed out on four-star safety Devon Hunter, who committed to Virginia Tech this week. Newsome is also a Virginia native, so we’ll see how much that matters to him. We won’t get answers until National Signing Day on February 1st, when he will announce his official commitment.

Newsome would be a big addition behind cornerback M.J. Stewart in 2017. He would also join new recruit Tre Shaw at the position. At five-foot-ten and 165-pounds, he is ranked the no. 81 athlete in the class and the no. 35 prospect from Virginia.
