UNC football recruiting: Tim Jordan commits to Tennessee

Three players remain on the UNC recruiting board

NCAA Football: Sun Bowl-Stanford vs North Carolina Ivan Pierre Aguirre-USA TODAY Sports

UNC Recruiting Status for the 2017 class as of Tuesday, January 24:

Early Enrollees: 7

Committed, but unsigned: 12

Commitments looking shaky: 1. As previously reported, linebacker Malik Robinson visited Indiana last weekend. He does continue to tweet about UNC, including this tweet Thursday afternoon reflecting a recent in-home visit.

Uncommitted recruits known to be “on the board” for UNC: 3

Current UNC consensus recruiting class ranking: 22.

The hope that Tim Jordan, a six-foot, 187 lbs running back from Bartow, Florida, would commit to the Tar Heels were dashed when he announced his commitment to Tennessee shortly after an official visit there. Jordan was one of two remaining running back prospects on UNC’s radar. It was never entirely clear whether the Tar Heels would have been willing to accept commitments from two more running backs in the 2017 class, so the sting of Jordan choosing the Volunteers would be reduced/eliminated if they are successful in recruiting A.J. Davis.

Tar Heels’ known remaining recruits (signing day is February 1):

Ameer Speed, 6’3”, 195lb CB, Jacksonville, FL: Speed’s choices seem to be down to UNC, Virginia Tech and Oregon, with Georgia as a potential wildcard.

A.J. Davis, 5’11”, 190lb RB, Lakeland, FL: Davis looks to be choosing between UNC and Louisville, where he visited last weekend. This looks to be a Louisville-UNC decision, although a late visit to Oregon could change that. In light of Jordan’s commitment to Tennessee, the stakes of this recruiting battle have risen for the Tar Heels.

Dazz Newsome, 5’10”, 165lb CB, Hampton, VA. Newsome reportedly did not visit Virginia Tech this past weekend as planned. Tar Heel fans should take that as a very promising indicator.
