Instead of waiting for National Signing Day, several UNC commits decided to enroll early to the university. Defensive tackle Xach Gill, who was recruited out of the enemy territory that is Wake Forest, North Carolina, officially signed with the Tar Heels earlier this month and is now on campus.

Gill was targeted by Tennessee, LSU, UCLA, and ACC schools like Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State, Virginia, Wake Forest before he decided on the UNC. After receiving an offer in November of 2014, he became a regular fixture on campus, visiting Chapel Hill in June of 2015 and February of 2016 for Junior Day. He made his official visit in September before taking his official visit two months later. Aside from a visit to Virginia Tech, it was practically all Tar Heels for Gill until he committed in December.

The six-foot-five, 270-pound defensive tackle is the no. 291 talent in the 2017 class and is no. 7 in the state of North Carolina. He also sits at no. 17 on the list of defensive tackles.

Now that Nazair Jones has declared for the NFL Draft, UNC’s defensive line will need a new leader. Hopefully Gill can be a part of the solution moving forward because the team can’t afford to lose its strong defense with most of the offense on the way out.
