UNC recruiting: Recapping the week of 10/9

Late Night with Roy is here, and two big-time recruits will be in attendance

NCAA Basketball: North Carolina-Late Night with Roy Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

There has not been a lot of big news on the football side for UNC this week, but it does sound like the Heels are becoming a favorite to pick up one of their target recruits. Earlier this week it was reported that 2018 prospect Kavesz Sherard spoke about which program out of the eight recruiting him stood out as his favorite so far. “As of now I’m really liking UNC,” Sherard said.

The six-foot-four 280 offensive lineman currently holds scholarship offers from Clemson, South Carolina, Charlotte, Kentucky, NC State, North Carolina, Duke, and Tennessee. So far he has made an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill, and it is likely that another visit should be happening in the near future.

Late Night with Roy Williams is just hours away, and as always it is a great night for recruits to come out and experience the team being introduced to all of the UNC fans in attendance. There is a little more fuel on the fire this year, as UNC will raise their seventh National Championship banner.

The biggest headline in terms of recruits attending this event comes from 2018 recruit and five-star prospect Romeo Langford. On Tuesday reports indicated that Langford would be attending Late Night instead of Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness event. This will count as one of his official visits as well, and he currently has no official visit set up with the Wildcats. He has, however, already taken official visits to Vanderbilt and UCLA back in September and has visits to Indiana and Kansas later this month.

Another non-commit that will be in attendance Friday night is 2019 target Wendell Moore. He will also be there with his Cox Mill High School teammate and UNC commit Rechon Black, who has assuredly been in Moore’s ear ever since the two began workouts to get ready for the upcoming basketball season. Other teams recruiting Moore include Maryland, Wake Forest, and Duke. It seems like UNC is currently the favorite to land the five-star prospect according to 247 Sports, so we will see what impact this weekend has in his decision. He also told Inside Carolina that he thinks he will make a decision soon, specifically stating that it may be late November or early December when he makes his announcement.

Five-star recruit and 2018 target Simi Shittu reportedly has his choices down to two schools at the moment: UNC and Vanderbilt. the six-foot-ten power forward is currently the number 8 overall prospect in the 2018 class according to 247 Sports, and has a high chance of becoming a one-and-done player wherever he ends up according to recent reports.

Should Shittu commit to UNC, it will be interesting to see what will happen in order to open up a scholarship for him as well as potentially opening one up for Romeo Langford should he decide to commit as well. As of right now, should nobody decide to enter the NBA draft early from the current UNC roster there isn’t an open scholarship for either player. It is hard to believe that Roy WIlliams would still be going after either player if he didn’t have a plan in place, so it should be interesting to see what the finished product of the 2018 recruiting class looks like.
