National Signing Day 2017: 3-star ATH Dazz Newsome signs with North Carolina

Welcome Dazz Newsome to the Tar Heels

Three-star athlete Dazz Newsome has announced his commitment to the University of North Carolina and will sign his National Letter of Intent on National Signing Day. It had been a three-school dance for a few months now.

Newsome committed to Maryland in October, however, Virginia Tech and UNC remained in the picture. Newsome went on an official visit to Chapel Hill and decided to decommit from the Terrapins during his trip. He later narrowed his decision down to those three schools.

Considered a cornerback, the Hampton, Virginia native has good instincts and quickness but will need to add weight and improve his strength once he gets on campus. The five-foot-ten, 165-pound Newsome is the no. 69 athlete in the 2017 class and the 30th-best player to come out of his state.

At one point it was believed that he and fellow Virginia recruit Devon Hunter would end up at the same school. When Hunter committed to Virginia Tech, it looked like Newsome wasn’t going to be far behind, but it seems like he wanted to be a Tar Heel.

Cornerback Des Lawrence graduates in a few months, so Newsome would have an opening for playing time behind M.J. Stewart.
