UNC Recruiting: Week of 7/15

As predicted, we have a lot more to go on in basketball than we did a week ago

2018 Hoophall Classic: Archbishop Molloy vs DeMatha Catholic David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

As I said last week, the Peach Jam gave us a huge idea of what to expect for the 2019 recruiting cycle now that it’s getting into full swing. Roy Williams made his priorities clear, and we definitely have a clearer picture of the players he’s looking at than we did two weeks ago. On the football side, there isn’t much to report recruiting-wise with the season about to start, but Larry Fedora did land another commitment.

  • Hey, I got something right! Raykwon Anderson was one of two players I put on commitment watch here last week, and he chose the Heels over UCF last Friday. He is listed on 247Sports as a cornerback due to his somewhat diminutive stature, but it seems that the staff sees him playing the same slot receiver role that Ryan Switzer did so very well. He has the speed and agility to do it, according to 247: He recorded a 4.47 second 40-yard dash and a 4.01 second short shuttle. Those are above-average numbers for an NFL receiver, and he’s still in high school (for comparison, Switzer clocked a 4.51 and 4.00).

  • This article from Inside Carolina is the most information on UNC’s 2018 board that’s available for free to the public. There isn’t much new information about the offered prospects other than that IC is operating under the assumption that Cole Anthony does indeed hold a UNC offer, but we now know to keep an eye on five-star wings Josh Green and Precious Achiuwa for Roy Williams’ next offers.
  • After Peach Jam, add power forwards C.J. Walker and Trayce Jackson-Davis to that list. Both performed extremely well in their matchups against Vernon Carey, whom Roy Williams clearly holds in high regard, and seem to have earned serious consideration from the UNC coach.
  • Armando Bacot continues to impress this summer. Williams has recruited him harder than anybody for at least the past year, and he seems to have yet again picked out a diamond in the (relative) rough. Bacot has stated his appreciation for UNC’s particular recruiting efforts, and hopefully this translates into a commitment when the time comes. He’s been one of this summer’s biggest risers in his class, at least among elite players.
